Alice nodded her thanks and backed out of the cabin, her heart beating fast against her ribs. She was sure that she had read the letters correctly. She was excellent at shorthand. But they made no sense, unless – of course – Stella was writing in code, and that meant that Stella might well be the spy.

And there was something else that was suspicious. Stella had been very eager to pick up the tray. A customer would never stoop to help a member of staff without good reason, and Alice was sure she knew what Stella’s reason was – she had not wanted anyone to see inside her notebook.

As she made her way back to the kitchen, Alice ran over the letters in her head. She must not forget them. On her way through the dining carriage, she caught Penelope’s eye and the girl frowned rather dramatically and shook her head. Clearly her investigations of Jake and Irving had gone no further, but Alice was too caught up in her own investigation to care. She wanted to sneak off to her own cabin and write down Stella’s message, but as she entered the passageway by the kitchen, Henri called her in with a list of jobs that she could help with, beginning with preparing the dough for fresh croissants the next morning. Alice sighed and went to her workstation.

She swept a generous handful of flour across her counter and reached for a water jug. She was just looking for the yeast pot when a thought occurred to her. She picked up a wooden skewer from the counter and, keeping her writing as small as possible, wrote out the letters in the flour on the worktop and stared at them while she began to mix her dough.
